A Strategic UK Energy Storage Development
Bia Power is developing the Walsoken Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a utility-scale energy infrastructure project located near Wisbech in Norfolk, England. The project is designed to support the UK's transition to a cleaner, more flexible and more resilient electricity grid.
Walsoken benefits from secured land rights, planning consent and an accepted grid connection offer, positioning the project as an advanced Ready-to-Build battery storage opportunity in the UK market.
The development has been structured with optionality: it can be delivered as a 200MW / 2-hour merchant BESS, or adapted into a 150MW / 8-hour long-duration energy storage configuration designed to target more stable, contracted revenue frameworks.

Flexible Development Strategy
Walsoken has been designed with flexibility in mind. The project can be developed under two distinct commercial strategies depending on market conditions, investor appetite and the preferred risk-return profile.
Merchant BESS Model - 200MW / 2-Hour Configuration
- The existing layout is designed around a 200MW / 2-hour system.
- This configuration is suited to the merchant business model, including participation in the Balancing Mechanism, Capacity Market, energy arbitrage and ancillary services.
- The 200MW configuration is well suited to short-duration grid flexibility and offers potentially higher returns, albeit with greater merchant revenue exposure.

Long Duration Energy Storage Model - 150MW / 8-Hour Configuration
- Using suitable technology, the site can potentially be configured as a 150MW / 8-hour long-duration storage project.
- This configuration is intended to align with the UK's Long Duration Energy Storage framework, including cap-and-floor or CfD-style revenue support structures where applicable.
- The long-duration route is designed to enhance bankability by targeting more stable, contracted revenue streams and reducing exposure to purely merchant revenues.
- The trade-off is higher capex and greater procurement and delivery complexity compared with the 200MW / 2-hour merchant configuration.

Positioned for the Future UK Grid
The UK battery storage market is entering a new phase of maturity. Previous headwinds, including uncertainty around market reform, high interest rates, elevated capex and grid connection uncertainty, are now beginning to ease.
Walsoken is well placed to benefit from this shift. The project has secured land, achieved planning consent and accepted a grid connection offer. These characteristics are expected to be important as National Grid and network operators continue reviewing the connection queue and prioritising advanced, deliverable projects.
As a large-scale, consented BESS project with commercial flexibility, Walsoken is positioned to support the UK's growing requirement for flexible capacity, renewable integration and long-duration storage solutions.
